The Evolution of a Beverage Ad

Dr. Pepper, which originated in Waco, Texas in 1880 or so, has undergone a number of advertisement changes in the past 130 years.

Here's an old one featuring a turn-of-the-century nude and some dubious vague health claims. At that time, ads such as these were the closest most people came to nudity.

In World War II, here's one that featured a Master Sergeant being unusually happy.

The lady in this ad looks improbably happy being a Pepper or the drink. Was some bourbon added to it? This is probably from the 1950's or 1960's; unless it's a retro ad:

Undoubtedly, this ad was not intended for use in the Bible Belt, even with a happy ending in which Dr. Pepper causes bipedalism:

A more recent ad that warns that it's not for women; but maybe for anime girls:

Anyway, mixing this beverage with alcohol works only with vodka. It gives a boost; but without the overstimulated side effect of an energy drink.

I'm a Pepper.
He's a Pepper.
She's a Pepper.
Wouldn't you like to be a Pepper, too?

You're too young to remember that jingle.

I must admit ignorance on that matter. How does one become a Pepper. Is it like a Peeper?

I can still hear the jingle in my head. I'm not going to attempt to sing it.

I think they should go back to their original ad.

that one add looks like the Beach Blanket Bingo time with Annette Funicello, so probably the early to mid 1960's. Love the first ad with sex sells twist. The way too happy soldier is a bit unsettling and not really liking the last add that has Japanese anime with a fat, dumpy kid in the Back to the Future DeLorean. these are quite humourous.

Dr. Pepper has always been one of my favorites. Always straight--never with alcohol. When I was a kid in the 50's I used to bug my mother to buy Dr Pepper, but she rarely would. I had tried it (in a glass bottle as all soft drinks were back then and the only way they should be packaged) and thought it was the greatest thing ever. I think my mother must of thought it was medicinal or there was something weird about it.

Now that I'm in charge of things I usually have Dr. Pepper on hand. Usually it's diet, often it's cherry-flavored, and almost always it's in a can.

I remember how when I was a kid my sister and I used to call grocery stores and ask, "Do you have Dr. Pepper in a can?"--this was after the canned drinks started being produced--then we'd say (if we weren't laughing too hard), "Why don't you let him out?" That was after we'd exhausted calling all the stores with the Prince Albert in a can query.

Oh, the days of prank calls. I wonder if any kids still do that?
