A few years ago, I discovered a Blue Angels pelican on the corner of Garden Street and Palafox in Pensacola. This was to honor the Naval Air Station and the Blue Angels based there:
It turns out that this was one of a series of pelicans in the Pensacola area, much like the cows of Chicago. Each has a particular theme. lHere's Presston, for the Pensacola News Journal:
Here's Jeremiah Pelican Lighthouse Keeper for Grand Crapaud [sceniclighthouses.blogspot.com]:
Why not a Pelikini in honor of the fine beaches in the area?
Here's one for Bilbo [http://bilbosrandomthoughts.blogspot.com/] an Air Force pelican:
This pelican has style:
Here's the Tale of Two Cities pelican. Don't lose your head over it, Sidney Carton:
Finally, here's Don Tristan de Pelican, in honor of the Spanish founding Pensacola:
Anyway, I thought you would like this local sculpture series from this fun city. I must admit I am quite taken with fun or weird sculpture.
We had geckos!

You must go to Berlin to see the bears! They, like these and Chicago's cows, are all painted up at every hotel, etc. These are all so original. I love the Spanish guy.
ReplyDeleteThose are quite attractive and photogenic!
ReplyDeletethese are awesome! i love when cities do this. dallas did flying pegasus' (pegasi?) a few years back. (because of the lighted mobile oil sign that was part of dallas' skyline for many years)
ReplyDeleteLinda Kay is right - Berlin is full of gaily painted bears, as is my wife's home town of Singen. There is also a city (I think it might be Vancouver, but I'm not sure) that is full of painted orcas. I'm thinking about starting something similar here in Washington, DC - gaily painted statues on every street corner of lobbyists with their hands outstretched in search of government handouts.
ReplyDeleteI like that kind of art!
ReplyDeleteThe St. Louis area has 250 four foot high birthday cakes right now for the 250 year anniversary of the city. They are spread out all over St. Louis city and county.
ReplyDeleteThose are gaudy birds!
ReplyDeleteThe Navy one is awesome. I like the lighthouse one also.
